WHAT IS SELF-CARE AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FORÂ YOU?
Self care may be defined as caring for yourself and it includes anything you do to keep yourself healthy- physically, mentally and spiritually.
Why is Self-Care important?
In a society in which people are expected to work long hours and pass on vacation days, there is a popular belief that we must always be productive.
But by taking some time out to engage in self care, you may relieve the pressures of everyday life and reset yourself to get back to a healthy point.
Engaging in a self-care routine has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, minimise frustration and anger, increase happiness etc.
Let's Consider Obstacles
Perhaps the single most common reason people give for not participating in self care is lack of time. While many of us have a lot going on, it's imperative that we take out time everyday for ourselves, even if minimally.
How to Practice Self Care: Building a Self care plan:
When you are focusing on a self care plan, you need to consider the 8 dimensions of wellness.
These dimensions Include:
1.Emotional: Talk to someone, reflect, journal and do something to keep your mind sane. Listen to music, take a walk, cuddle, laugh, cry take a nap.
2. Environmental: breathe in fresh air, enjoy the sun reduce waste, recycle, clean your house, redesign a room
3. Financial: Develop a practical financial plan, avoid credit cards, start saving.
4. Intellectual: Read, listen to audio books, have healthy conversations, complete puzzles, take a class, learn a new language, try something new.
5. Occupational: Learn a trade, register for a new course, take on tasks you enjoy, open your own business
6. Physical: Work out daily, take a walk, eat healthy, get enough sleep, avoid drugs and alcohol
7. Social: Meet up with friends, go out, have fun, dance, engage in healthy social media use, have a big laugh
8. Spiritual: Meditate, pray, engage in yoga, do right by others, mind your speech, be kind.
Remember that Self care is all about you.
What works for one person may not work for you.
